This fundraising item will get your name entered for a chance to name our Bush Order Sourdough Starter.

*Some conditions apply

This is your chance to get the naming rights to the base of all our breads, our Sourdough Starter.

Our Sourdough Starter, born in 2013, is the most important part of the bakery side of our business. Now 7-years old, our starter still does not have a name.

What is a Sourdough Starter?

A sourdough starter is a stable culture of lactic acid bacteria and yeast in a mixture of flour and water. Broadly speaking, the yeast produces gas (carbon dioxide) which leavens the dough, and the lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid, which contributes flavour in the form of sourness. The lactic acid bacteria metabolize sugars that the yeast cannot, while the yeast metabolizes the byproducts of lactic acid fermentation.

Why do people name their starters?

Well, because the starter is a living culture of organisms and requires regular feeding and caring, people sometimes consider them pets and thus give them names.

To this point, we have not.
